Checklist
- Make sure to book your removal company. Choose carefully – we recommend picking an AFRA accredited company. Make sure to establish your budget and get a transparent quote.
- Get household insurance for your new home and organize your contents
- Notify the Electoral Office regarding your new address and check car registrations and driver’s license.
- Measure spaces in new home and ensure that your own furniture is going to fit. Asses if larger items are going to fit through the doors.
- Prepare all sorts of equipment and note if there are dents or scratches.
- Make a proper note of all the precious belongings.
- Get rid of everything that you don’t really need.

If You Are Packing Yourself?
- Make sure to arrange the carton and the packing materials with the removals or the storage company.
- Do not use newspaper for wrapping but clean white paper instead.
- Label every single carton with the room destination.

- Pack the heavier items in smaller boxes and the lighter ones in bigger boxes to ensure the safety.

2-4 Weeks From Moving Date

1 Week To Moving Day
- Draw up the plan for each of the rooms in your new home so that you can place the furniture in your new home.
- Make sure to have the indoor plants watered lightly and pack them for the move. Advise gardeners, cleaners, babysitters.
- Back up your computer hard disc.
- Make sure to re-confirm all the details surrounding the move with your moving company.
- Prepare a welcoming note for the new residents and make sure to include the relevant information and contact details.
- Arrange proper access to the parking for your removalist’s truck.
Day Of Move
- Give the removalists the floor plans and the new address along with the parking information
- Ask them to load the kitchen boxes at the end so you can unload them first
- Have all pet needs at hand and keep the visitors to minimum.
- Ensure all meters are read, organize new house key collection
- Check off all the items as they are loaded in the van
- Lock all the doors and windows and turn all water sources off
- Check garden area, garage, sheds, and cupboards
- Remove the remote garage opener from your vehicle
The Day Before The Move
- Defrost and make sure to empty out the fridge. Have a portable ice and Esky in order to get the contents transported.
- Pack your personal items that you are going to take
- Make sure to leave essential items for the evening if you are using professional services
- Unplug all appliance cords
- Have cash on hand if there are any last-minute expenses
- Inform the neighbours and the police if your house is going to be empty for a considerable period
- Say goodbye to your neighbours
- Prepare action plan for the following day


At Your New Home
- Give clear directions for the furniture placements to the removalists
- Check that all the utilities are connected and that you have hot water on
- Check if everything is handled properly when the removalists are finished
- Have a security check and get the locks changed if you have any concerns
- Check and sign all inventory in case of an interstate move or from a storage unit
- Assemble all furniture as soon as possible
- Settle pets and children with the familiar items
- Notify the removalists if anything is missing
- Keep your pets inside for a few days
- Check if you have all the necessary keys and instructions for your new home
- Contact the local Council and arrange garbage collection
- Make sure to greet all your new neighbours and be polite!
